Hodge Burdock was a lamia vampire, the husband of Opal Burdock (née Redfern), and the great-uncle of Rowan, Kestrel, Ash and Jade Redfern.
History[]
His marriage to Opal ended upon Hodge's execution at the hands of the Night World Council for telling a human about the Night World's existence. His gruesome death consisted of being slowly impaled all over his body with small stakes repeatedly; his manner of execution is known to all of his family members (his grandniece Jade strongly tries never to remember his death and is understandably terrified by the possibility of ever being subjected to it). His widow Opal consequently flees to Briar Creek, Oregon, where she lives in seclusion among humans.
Etymology[]
The name Hodge is a medieval form of the name Roger, meaning "famous spear", from the Germanic Hrodger ('hrod' meaning "fame", 'ger' meaning "spear").
Burdock refers to the plant burdock, which has medicinal uses. Therefore, his surname can be considered a traditional lamia name.
