Dorcas Harman was a witch and member of the Harman family. According to the family tree, she is the mother of Cybele and Ursula.
History[]
Dorcas married a man named Jareth Fincastle. The tree states that in addition to her daughters, Cybele and Ursula, Dorcas also had a son, Dorian Harman, known as 'Old Dorian', though he is never mentioned in the novels.
Etymology[]
Dorcas means gazelle or roe deer. It is also one of the names of a Biblical woman (also referred to as Tabitha), known for her charity towards the poor, who was raised from the dead by Peter. Dorcas societies, church-based organisations who provide clothing for the poor, are named after the Biblical Dorcas.
Trivia[]
- The tree states that Dorcas was born in 1857, however, this would make her around 90 years old when Cybele and Ursula, who are described as being middle aged, were born, thus making it extremely unlikely this is Dorcas' true birthdate.
- The tree seems to imply that Dorcas is the sister of Sybil Harman, mother of Edgith, Elspeth and Emmeth Harman. However, Sybil is stated as having been born in 1889, and her children are significantly older than Cybele and Ursula, and if Dorcas were born at the same general period as Sybil, she would be in her 50's/60's when Cybele and Ursula were born, thus making it extremely unlikely - though not impossible - that she could still even bear children. It is possible, though unlikely, that if Sybil and Dorcas are sisters that there is simply a very large age gap between them; however, it is more likely that this is an error (one of several on the tree). One possibility is that Dorcas is actually Sybil's niece rather than her sister, but this is not specified.
- If the Judeo-Christian God is counted among the pantheon of gods worshipped by the witches, Dorcas would have a traditional witch name.
